This is a quest to collect, catalogue, and contemplate One Million Splotz of Glue.
Splotz of Glue are the everyday actions we do that BuildCommunity. In particular, these are the actions that we do to increase knowledge, to connect with others, to build trust and seek understanding, and to get involved. They are place specific. Our emphasis is on building communities, as in Reverend Frederick McFeely Rogers Communities (you know neighborhoods) and not communities of interest or online communities. It is about making our hometowns better.
We believe that these Splotz of Glue builds community. Activities such as
- attending candidate forums and then voting;
- coaching little league (even from the bleachers);
- attending a planning commission meeting (bonus points if you attend as a commissioner);
- marching in a parade or marching on city hall; and
- and, yes, joining bowling leagues or our favorite
beer, uhm, softball leagues.
These Splotz of Glue when done deliberately and in abundance help to build the kinds of communities we want to live in. The key, we believe, is to be deliberate and reflexive.
