I am meeting with a group of programmers tomorrow night and hopefully we can get this community todo list application built.

I was asked why I am spending so much time and effort on finding or developing this application. The short answer is that I believe that seeing the community todo list in action (via the web application) will make it easier for people to understand the project and make their commitments.

We are getting close, I think.

I wanted to build a community todo list so that we could array the results of the silly workshops. No such application existed, and according to my friend Mike, all the cool programmers already have dates to the prom. Who knew? But, I will accept that as the answer as to why no programmer responded to my inquiries. I think a 43Things-Digg mashup would have worked well. This (http://h2obeta.law.harvard.edu/home.do) would have been brilliant but I could not figure out how to load it on our servers. Anyone?

There is no open source version of 43Things, which is too bad. But, there are open source clones of Digg. That is the path I took. So, until some code jedi helps us with the H20 thing (heh, H20 = Harvard 2.0?) we are going with Pligg.

The One Million Splotz of Glue Campaign Online Splotz Monitoring and Tracking Webthing

It was the best I could do, but I think it will serve our purposes. Ideas for Splotz of Glue are entered as you would a news item in Digg. Splotzes are then committed to (think votes) by community builders. Not quite what I envisioned but okay for version, uhm, let us call this version 0.71. This allows us to array and track Splotz. There is a discussion feature as well as a way to see who is doing what in your neighborhood, sort of.

What do you think?

No new bounces, but several people engaged to give critical feedback. I appreciate their input and it will be incorporated into this campaign.

The latter part of the week has been consumed with trying to find an online application that will run the community todo list. I have not been able to find the right application nor a programmer who could build it for me.

Lloyd,

I’ve been thinking about how I build community, and I think it comes down to being present and engaging others. By being present, I mean showing up on my blog or in person, and being present to what’s happening right there and then, not thinking about the past or the future. Engaging others to me means sharing ideas that your passionate about, then asking others to respond.

Thanks and good luck!

This is what we do as bloggers and citizen media we engage with passion and ask others to respond. Thank you, George. We have five. Only 999,995 more to go.

Ming the Mechanic gives it a bounce and wonders what this is all about, just stories? I got asked that twice today. A friend responded that she could not make heads or tails of the site. Good feedback. I will work on that.

what do i do to help build a community? i’m a third party in Noveltown with N.L. Belardes and Matildakay. we’re working together to build an awareness of the arts - especially with literary works. we have magazine due out at the end of this month and we’re tossing around ideas on how to participate with the local junior college and adult literacy council to motivate others to contribute and be a part of the literary arts in their community.

i’m also a member of the filipino community in delano, ca where i was born and raised. i still work with them occasionally on several projects that help maintain our historical hall and building scholarships for our youth who want to help build the community as well as learn more about their culture.

i have a bi-racial daughter as well and i’m doing whatever i can to make her aware of who she is and where she comes from. i want to be proud of all of that and i feel that by what i choose to do and participate in , it shows/influences her to be strong, individual.

That is beautiful. Thank you for all that you do. I am very glad to meet you. Thank you for the Splotz. We have four. Only 999,996 more to go.
